Take Action - Get
Spykes Off the Market!

Newsflash: A-B has announced the permanent removal of Spykes from the market place.
It just shows what can happen when people actually take action. They will also reformulate their alcoholic energy drinks to remove the stimulants.

Energy Drinks

Thirty-one percent of U.S. teenagers say they drink energy drinks, such as Monster, Red Bull and Rockstar, but experts warn the beverages can cause serious health problems.

Most contained caffine, taurine, guarana, and ginseng

Some of the energy drinks carry a warning reading "Not recommended for children." Or, "No more than three a day."

Taking Energy Drinks One Step Further

Rockstar, who markets a number of non-alcoholic energy drinks, started adding alcohol under a very similar brand name: These 16 oz cans of Rock Star 21 (in two similar designs - Regular and Light, both with 6.0% Alc/Vol, and a different design also with 6.0% alv/vol.) Other malt based energy drinks which are being packaged to appear similar to energy drinks: Hard Wired X (6.9%), Liquid Charge (6.9%), Liquid Core (6.9%), Mickey's Stinger (7.0%), Sparks Regular and Light, both with 6.0% and Plus with 7.0%, and Tilt Orange label with 6.6% and Green Label with 8.0%.

Most of these have disappeared, being replaced by 23.5 and 24 oz versions with 9.0% to 12.0% alcohol - Core High Gravity, Dragon Joose and Four Loko. A major increase in volume and alcohol mixed with uppers.

They all featured caffeine, taurine, guarana, and ginseng on the label, similar to their non-alcoholic counter parts.

Because of the dangers involved with combining alcohol with caffeine and other stimulants, Tilt, Sparks, Dragon Joose and Four Loko have been removed from the shelves until the stimulants have been removed. To date, Tilt and Sparks have reformulated their products and they are back on the shelf without any fan fare. They are shelved where they were previously to appear like they are still energy drinks but they aren't.

Alcopops like Spykes carry even higher levels of alcohol and were package to appeal to an even younger market. (Editor's note: A-H has taken Spykes off the market.)

What the future may hold

Flavored, powdered meth is begining to show up and is marketed as an energy drink.

Four Loko caused NJ man lasting heart damage

A New Jersey man who says he suffered permanent heart damage after drinking the alcohol- and caffeine-laced Four Loko beverage is suing its manufacturer.

Tire salesman Michael Mustica of Knowlton Township filed the lawsuit last week against Phusion Projects.

The lawsuit, first reported last week by The Press of Atlantic City, claims that during a visit to Atlantic City in October, Mustica drank 2 1/2 cans of Four Loko and suffered heart arrhythmia.

Each can of Four Loko contains 12 percent alcohol — the equivalent of three cans of beer.

Phusion spokesman Chris Hunter declined to comment Monday to The Star-Ledger of Newark but says the company still believes mixing alcohol and caffeine is safe. Phusion agreed to remove caffeine from the drink in November after complaints from the Food and Drug Administration.
