Gordon Clay here. The holidays are coming to an end. Hanukkah, Muharram and Winter Solstice have already passed. But there are more.

I remember a couple of year's ago when the interim pastor of Safe Harbor Christian Fellowship called for a recall of any judge or politician who wouldn't allow putting a manger scene in front of city hall and demoaning the fact that everyone wasn't wishing him a Merry Christmas. I encouraged his fellow Christian ministers, at the time, to put a manger scene up on their Church property.

So, Saturday, I toured the 20 Christian Churches in Brookings-Harbor. Still not a manger to be found. I guess it wasn't that important.  Note: This tour didn't include Dom's church, since I couldn't find a listing for it anywhere.

But, alas, I did find one manger scene. Not in front of City Hall but still on City property - at Azalea Park.

I do hope that in the future, the light show will include other spiritual traditions and that Christians' love of community, tolerance and humanity chooses to recognize that the United States, and even Brookings-Harbor, is very diverse and that we need to work together instead faining superiority. Saying "Happy Holidays" doesn't demean the person saying it, it honors the person it is being said to instead of Dom's approach to respond to anyone wishing happiness during this season, that includes many religious holidays, to "look them right in the eye and say 'merry Christmas'" back. What a distasteful way to try and encourage others to see your way as a better way.

We still have Christmas, Ashura, Kwanzaa and New Years ahead so here's wishing you all "Happy Holidays."

Oh, and remember December 26th is National Whiner's Day: a day dedicated to those who aren't thankful for the gifts that they have received and return them.
