23-Year-Old's Suicide May Have Mimicked '13RW'

Man commits suicide and leaves behind tapes, similar to '13 Reasons Why'

A 23-year-old man from Peru died by suicide this week, and left behind recordings of what allegedly inspired his suicide, according to Yahoo! News.

A 23-year-old man from Peru took his own life this week and left behind recordings of what allegedly inspired him to do so, according to Yahoo! News.

The death was allegedly inspired by the hit Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why.”

The Peruvian news outlet Diario Clarin reported that Franco Alonso Lazo Medrano jumped from a balcony of his apartment, saying he “can’t stand a heartbreak.”

Medrano survived the fall but later died in the hospital, Yahoo! reported.

Police told Diario Clarin they found two suicide notes at his home, one for a woman named Claudio and the other containing a list of names of people who he had recorded tapes for.

He said in his note that these people caused him to kill himself.

The notes didn’t specifically reference “13 Reasons Why,” but “leaving behind tapes for people after suicide is the main plot point of the Netflix hit,” according to Yahoo! News.

Leading Utah suicide expert Greg Hudnall said this event was “very frustrating.”

“I have had numerous calls from (ecclesiastical) leaders, school administrators and parents sharing their frustrations,” he told the Deseret News. “It dumbfounds me that we as a society would allow this to continue."

Hudnall also said that he’s spoken with a number of professionals over the last few weeks. Some, he said, told him “(the show) was helpful in helping others understand the challenges our young people are facing.”

But Hudnall said he hasn’t watched the show, and he encourages others not to watch it, either.

“13 Reasons Why” has received heavy praise and criticism, according to the Associated Press. Suicide prevention specialists across the country expressed worry that teens might watch the series without fully absorbing the issues or asking questions.

Despite these concerns, “13 Reasons Why” will have a second season, according to CNN. Executive producer Selena Gomez first announced it on Instagram.

Few details are known about the second season. But Dylan Minnette, who played main character Clay Jensen, offered one bleak hint to The Hollywood Reporter.

"It's going to be just as important and dark," he said.

It's for these reasons that Hudnall said in May that teens shouldn’t watch the show without parents. He also said young people shouldn’t watch the show at all since it sensationalizes suicide.

"I'm all about educating people on prevention,” he said in a phone interview. “I'm all about suicide prevention. What I'm not about is sensationalizing suicide."

Hudnall said the show doesn’t accurately portray suicide, which spreads misinformation about it and sensationalizes the subject.

For example, Hudnall said the show doesn’t offer any positive role models. It also doesn’t do much to educate people on suicide, he said, since Hannah’s struggle plays out over the course of six months, and not the more likely 24- to 48-hour window.

"Young people don't plan as often about the suicide as the show portrays it,” he said. “A lot of times in a lot of those situations, we see the suicide coming in within a 24- to 48-hour window.

Hudnall also said “13 Reasons Why” can lead to more deaths, since popularizing the issue creates contagion.

Hudnall said parents with teens who want to watch the series should watch it with their children. They should research resources that can help talk their kids through the issue.

“We still want to provide that hope,” he said. He added, "I think in the long run it (the show) can cause more trauma and more pain for children.”

Is this the first ‘13 Reasons Why’ copycat suicide?

Hannah Will RETURN for '13 Reasons Why' Season 2, But HOW?

A Peruvian man took his life and left behind tapes to those who reportedly drove him to his death in a move similar to the plot of Netflix’s hit series “13 Reasons Why.”

Franco Alonso Lazo Medrano, 23, an industrial engineer, committed suicide, according to Peruvian media outlet Diario Clarin. Peruvian media outlets did not specify the exact timing of Medrano’s death.

Medrano reportedly yelled right before his death: “I can’t stand a heartbreak”.

Peruvian police reportedly discovered two suicide notes; one to a woman named Claudia and a letter of instructions while investigating. The instructions mapped out who would receive tapes Medrano recorded and stored on his computer, according to local press. The audio recordings were for the people who reportedly drove Medrano to take his life.

The aftermath of Medrano’s death draws similarities to the plot of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, based on Jay Asher’s book originally published in 2007. The series follows a girl, Hannah Baker, who committed suicide and sends tapes she recorded to certain people explaining why and how they pushed her to take her life.

It is not clear if Medrano was inspired by the television show.

Although popular, 13 Reasons Why has received widespread criticism from parents to mental health centres who warned the show could be a trigger, especially to those who are having suicidal thoughts, according to the National Association of School Psychologists.

Netflix has since added warnings to viewers at the beginning of each episode.

“There has been a tremendous amount of discussion about our series, 13 Reasons Why, Netflix said in a statement to People. “While many of our members find the show to be a valuable driver for starting an important conversation with their families, we have also heard concern from those who feel the series should carry additional advisories. Moving forward, we will add an additional viewer warning card before the first episode as an extra precaution for those about to start the series.”

Man imitated the '13 Reasons Why' suicide and left behind tapes

A Peruvian man committed suicide and left behind audiotapes allegedly inspired by Netflix's controversial suicide series "13 Reasons Why."

According to a Peruvian news outlet, Diario Clarín, Franco Alonso Lazo Medrano, jumped from the window of his fourth-floor apartment in Arequipa, Peru, after shouting, "I can't stand a heartbreak." The 23-year-old's mother was present during her son's plunge. He reportedly survived the fall but was pronounced dead hours later at San Juan de Dios hospital.?

Medrano left behind two suicide notes, addressing one letter to a woman who allegedly rejected his romantic advances and the other to his family detailing instructions where they could locate the recordings.

Although it is unclear whether the man watched or was inspired by the Netflix series in Diario Clarín's report, his actions closely mimic the storyline.

In the "13 Reasons Why" series, which premiered in March, a teenager, Hannah Baker, records a series of 13 tapes before committing suicide, addressing each tape to 13 individuals she felt were partly responsible for her death.

The show, which was co-produced by Selena Gomez and based on a 2007 fiction novel of the same name, has attracted widespread criticism for its depiction of suicide. After concerns were raised by health experts who argued the show's content could be potentially harmful to young people with suicidal thoughts, Netflix added warnings to the series.

"There has been a tremendous amount of discussion about our series, "13 Reasons Why." While many of our members find the show to be a valuable driver for starting an important conversation with their families, we have also heard concern from those who feel the series should carry additional advisories," Netflix said in a statement earlier this year. "Moving forward, we will add an additional viewer warning card before the first episode as an extra precaution for those about to start the series."
